Specimen Requirements

 

Specimen should arrive within 2 hours of draw.

 

Plasma

Container/Tube: 2 Light blue-top (sodium citrate) tube(s)

Volume:  Fill tube to "fill" line. Tubes must be completely full for proper blood to anticoagulant ratio.

Collection Instructions:

1. Tube for discard (without additives) should be drawn if using a winged blood collection set to remove dead space prior to filling citrate tube.

2. Gently invert 3 to 4 times to mix blood. Do not shake.

Transport Temperature:  Ambient. If there is a delay in transport of >4 hours see "Note" below.

Note: If there is a delay in transport:

          Centrifuge.

          Remove plasma to plastic tube.

          Centrifuge plasma again.

          Remove plasma (platelet-poor) a second time to fresh plastic tube.

          Freeze specimen for transport.

 

Label specimen appropriately (plasma).
