Specimen Requirements

Plasma

Container/Tube:  Light blue-top (sodium citrate) tube(s)

Volume:  Fill tube to "fill" line. Tube must be completely full for proper blood to anticoagulant ratio.

Collection Instructions:

1. Tube for discard (without additives) should be drawn if using a winged blood collection set to remove dead space prior to filling citrate tube.

2. Gently invert 3 to 4 times to mix blood. Do not shake.

Transport Temperature:  Ambient. See specific transport guidlines stated below.

     Patients on heparin therapy:

          Specimen must be received in lab within 1 hour of collection.

     Patients not on heparin therapy:

          Specimen must be received in lab within 4 hours of collection.

     Note: If there is a delay in transport:

          Centrifuge.

          Remove plasma to plastic tube. 

          Centrifuge plasma again,

          Remove plasma (platelet-poor) a second time to fresh plastic tube.

          Freeze specimen for transport.

 

     Label specimen appropriately (plasma).
